Joan Bryant

Joan Bryant teaches African American history in Syracuse University’s African American Studies Department. She is interested in how Jim Crow era photographs of Black life illuminate the trajectory of Black freedom after the abolition of slavery. Of particular concern are the divergent roles photography played in representing Black freedom as a modern American phenomenon. This issue stems from her longstanding focus on the complicated landscape of nineteenth-century freedom and Black conceptions of race.
